As Delhi University awaits the recommendation of the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) standing committee on what to do with the students already admitted under the Bachelors (with Honours) in Management Studies (BMS) programme, a decision on how admissions for its three subsidiary courses will take place this year has been taken.
Students who have already appeared for the BMS entrance exam on Wednesday will now be accommodated in the university under the Bachelors in Business Studies (BBS) and BA Honours in Business Economics (BBE) courses. The principals committee on Saturday decided that admissions to this course will be held on the basis of the criteria that were announced for BMS admission 2014-15.
However, the best four subjects will be calculated as per the admission guideline for these courses prevalent in the year 2012-13. According to a university official, “Since the entrance tests for BBS and BBE and Bachelor of Financial Investment Analysis (BFIA) used to be common even in 2012-13, the students who have already appeared for the BMS exam will be accommodated under these courses. The seat distribution will be restored to the status 2012-13 and centralised counselling would take place as per the schedule which is yet to be announced.”
While this situation has been taken care of, the UGC is yet to notify the university on how the current batch of BMS students will be dealt with. Though the BTech course has been allowed to continue for the current batch, the UGC is likely to take a call on BMS on Monday. In most probability, the course may stay as the UGC has already given assurance to BMS students who were protesting outside the Minister of Human Resource Development Smriti Irani’s house on Sunday. The main cause of concern for this course is whether to continue BMS for the current batch or change the course from a four year BMS degree to a three year degree in Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), BA Honours in Business Economics (BBE) and Bachelor of Financial Investment Analysis (BFIA). “Since three courses were combined to make BMS, there may be deliberation over giving the current batch of students an option to choose one of the three courses. However, the fact that students were promised a BMS degree comes in the way,” said a university official.
Admissions to various courses under the three year undergraduate programme will begin on Tuesday. Students getting admission to BBS, BBE and BFIA will be evaluated on the basis of both, the entrance test and ‘best of four’ aggregate.
