A leading scientist of biochemistry of South Delhi campus of Delhi University, Professor Anil Tyagi will be the new vice-chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha (GGSIP) University. lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung has approved his name for the vice-chairman of GGSIP University. The post falls vacant after retirement of Dr Anul Beniwal whose tenure ended in December 2013.
Sources in the lieutenant-Governor Office told The Pioneer that a high-level search committee constituted by Ministry of Higher Education of Delhi Government has recommended professor Anil Tyagi to be the next vice-chancellor of GGSIP University.
Presently, he is a professor in the department of biochemistry in Delhi University’s South Campus. Prior to this, he was serving as the head of the Department of Biochemistry in DU’s South Campus. He was picked among a panel of three contenders for this coveted position. Other two contenders for this assignment included
Dr Pankaj Mittal, who is the vice-chancellor of BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya in Haryana and Professor Anu Singh lather of GGSIP University. There are 106 colleges affiliated to the GGSIP University. Of these, 86 are private education institutions running professional courses.
Professor Tyagi has thoroughly researched on the control and amelioration of tuberculosis, the disease that claims more than 30,000 human lives every week. He will have to handle a massive cleansing operation in the University as the lieutenant-Governor has already launched a drive to streamline the functioning of the all the institutions affiliated to GGSIP University.
Professor Tyagi’s profile in research work has been just outstanding. For the last more than 15 years, Tyagi’s group has focused on two broad areas — development of new vaccines against tuberculosis and drug discovery programme for new potential drugs against tuberculosis.
