Rs1,260 crore elevated road project to open in three years
In a bid to provide hassle-free traffic movement, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for Phase-III of the Rs1,260 crore Barapullah elevated road project connecting Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar. The construction of construction of Phase-III will begin in March 2015 and is likely to be completed by December 2017. The work on second phase Barapullah elevated road connecting Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to INA market was recently started whereas the third phase of Barapullah elevated road is still going through tendering process.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured that development work will be faster in the BJP regime as compared to the previous Congress regime. Hailing former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for starting process of investment in infrastructure projects such as road and highways, Singh said that most of the road projects were initiated during NDA regime. Vajpayee’s birthday falls on December 25. He also hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jan Dhan Yojana and termed it one of the best schemes of the country.
An elevated corridor from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Sarai Kale Khan over Barapullah Nullah was constructed by PWD in 2010 under Phase I. Extension of this elevated road towards the West, up to Aurobindo Marg, has been in progress under Phase-II. Approval from the UTTIPEC and DUAC has already come in for this phase. As part of the design, a bridge and a viaduct will be built. The 3.5km long elevated road will be divided by an eight-lane carriageway of 17.5m each. “This road will cater to traffic from all directions between Sarai Kale Khan and Mayur Vihar via the bridge. Finally the stretch from Mayur Vihar to AIIMS shall be signal-free through the elevated Barapullah Road,” said officials.
An additional flyover at Mayur Vihar Phase-I will also be constructed. A three-lane 11m wide flyover, parallel to the existing on at Mayur Vihar, with one additional auxiliary lane 3.5m wide connecting two loops, will also be constructed. Along with this, two loops of 7.5m width — for turning right from NH-24 to Akshardham and from Noida to NH-24 will be constructed.
Along with this, two lanes will be built for turning left towards Akshardham and two lanes for a right turn towards Noida, connecting to the existing flyover at Mayur Vihar. A slip road on the left connecting to the bridge from Noida will also be part of the design while another slip road from Ring Road at Sarai Kale Khan will be constructed to meet the elevated road near Power Grid Corporation sub-station for going towards Mayur Vihar.
Officials said according to a PWD study last year, there are 70,000 passenger car units (PCUs) operating on Phase-I of the elevated corridor between Sarai Kale Khan and Jawarharlal Nehru (JlN) Stadium. The second phase between JlN and INA, which is expected to be completed by December 2015, will see 1 lakh PCUs operational.
“The project will cut travel time drastically and save fuel. The extension will be connected to South Delhi, easing traffic on NH-24. It will also decongest the Ring Road at Ashram, South Extension and Bhairon Marg. While it takes 45 minutes to travel from Mayur Vihar to AIIMS, it will take only 10 minutes once the new corridor is completed,” a PWD official said.
Officials said the corridor aims to provide a signal-free junction at the UP link Road near Mayur Vihar. A flyover parallel to the existing single-carriageway flyover will be built with loops and slip roads. “The project will reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. We will be able to overcome the cost of the project across three phases by 2020. While the cost of Phase-I has already been recovered, Phase-II cost will be recovered by 2018 and Phase-III by 2020,” said officials.
