'Panel to be formed for each self-financing course in PU'

Tuesday, 19 February 2013 | Sapna Singh | Chandigarh

A Committee will be formed for each self-financing course in Panjab University to look into the loopholes of the existing system and propose educational reforms.

Addressing a Press conference, PU Vice-Chancellor Arun Grover on Monday said, “The Committee to be constituted in each Department of Panjab University would analyse the necessities of each department.”

Grover said the idea behind the formation of Committee for all self-financing courses is to keep check on the implementation of the existing plans in various departments. This Committee will also give proposals for educational reforms to the higher authorities.

Clarifying about the Committee which was recently formed for University Dental Institute, Grover said, “This Committee is not any Vigilance or Audit Committee like CAG (Comptroller Audit General). Rather, it would work for the betterment of the existing educational system.”

Meanwhile, the V-C has given green signal to increase the fee structure of University’s self-financing courses. The final decision in this regard would be taken by Syndicate and Senate.

He said, “The budget which is given by the UGC to University is not sufficient to offer appropriate salaries to the faculties of self-financing courses. Hence, the fees would be increased.”

The V-C also announced to put in place American education system here in University soon.

This means that the Panjab University will offer a continuous seven-year program (graduation to PhD) wherein a student would have the flexibility and the option to study up to a particular level comprising a certain number of years and also to do more than one specialisation.

V-C also informed that PU has prepared a concept note of five pages to be submitted to the UGC to seek funds for academics. “The purpose to submit this five-page concept note, signed by me is to open the doors of direct funding from UGC if the concept gets selected, he added.

“This is under a competition where top 30 Universities of the nation have to submit this five pages innovative note on academic values and ideas. Our team of Professors has made this report. If this gets selected, then hopefully University will get the grant of Rs 300 crore for five years,” said V-C.

Grover also informed that the university will host the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the 150th birth anniversary of Ruchi Ram Sahni.
