As per the provisional data released by the Central Statistics Organisation (CSO) for the year 2012-13, Madhya Pradesh leads major States of the country in respect of growth rate. MP’s agriculture growth rate for 2012-13 is 14.28 per cent and GSDP 10.02 per cent. According to experts, this is quite a creditable achievement.
Generally the growth rate nosedives in the following year of exceptionally high growth rate. Belying this thumb rule, MP has given quite an impressive account of itself. In a way, MP has witnessed one-third increase in agricultural growth rate during last two years.
An important feature of these statistics is that this year, MP has occupied the top position in respect of GSDP by dislodging Bihar. last year, Bihar was on the top with 13.26 per cent GSDP followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11.81 per cent. As per the estimate of the year 2012-13, Bihar’s GSDP has come down to 9.48 per cent.
The State has registered continuous increase in per-capita income. This is despite the fact that one third population of MP is made up of schedule caste and schedule tribes. During the current financial year the per-capita income of the State is estimated to be up by 8.69 per cent.
Creditable achievements have been made in all sectors’ growth in MP as a result of constant and committed efforts over last seven years. During the period, MP’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has risen by 96 per cent while a massive increase of 284 per cent has been registered in per capita income. Most importantly, the State has made rapid progress in all three sectors — agriculture, industry and service.
At constant rates, MP’s GSDP in the base year 2004-05 stood at Rs1,11,926.89 crore. According to advance estimates of MP Economics & Statistics Department, this has increased to Rs2,21,462.86 crore in the year 2012-13. As per a quick estimate, it was Rs2,01,898.87 crore in the year 2011-12.
At constant rates, the Net GSDP stood at Rs99,940.10 crore in the year 2004-05 while (as per advance estimates), it has risen to Rs1,96,253.48 crore in the year 2012-13. This increase also amounts to 96.37 per cent.
Spectacular success has been achieved in all three sectors of growth — including agriculture, industry and service since the year 2004-05. During the period under review, massive increase was registered in agriculture area and production. Total 1.97 crore acre land was under agriculture during year 2004-05, which has increased to 2.21 crore acres in the year 2011-12. Similarly, agriculture production in the State stood at 2.49 crore metric tonnes in the year 2004-05, which has risen to 3.2 crore metric tonnes during 2011-12.
Rapid expansion of irrigation resources played an important role in this unprecedented increase in agriculture production. Only 7 lakh hectares was under irrigation in 2004-05, which has been increased to 21 lakh hectares in 2011-12. Production of wheat, paddy, gram and mustard has specially increased. Madhya Pradesh has registered a record wheat production in 2011-12. There are fair chances of the State making it to the top this year in this respect. In the State, 127 lakh metric tonnes of wheat was produced during 2011-12.
Agriculture growth rate was 7.98 per cent in 2004-05. It rose to 18.91 per cent during 2011-12, which is highest in the country.
