Eye on 2014 polls: Political activity picks up in Haryana

Tuesday, 19 February 2013 | Bhupinder Sharma | Chandigarh

Keeping an eye at the lok Sabha elections in 2014 and to increase their vote base, all political parties have launched their campaign, increasing the political temperature of the State.

Indian National lok Dal (INlD), the main Opposition party in Haryana Assembly, has already started its Statewide month-long “Congress Pol-Khol” campaign from which will continue till March 15. The party leaders claimed that they will organise about 8,000

public meetings in 7,000 villages and cities of the State during this campaign.

Apart from alleging that jailed party chief Om Prakash Chautala was a victim of Congress machinations, INlD is also focusing on criminal cases against several Ministers and MlAs of Haryana Government, including Gopal Kanda facing Geetika murder case and OP Jain and Zile Ram Sharma facing criminal charges in murder of a former sarpanch.

The INlD is also alleging that there was involvement of Rohtak MlA BB Batra and Anad Singh Dangi in Apna Ghar scandal in Rohtak, besides other cases in which the MlAs of the ruling party are allegedly involved.

Similarly, after taking over as BJP president of Haryana, Ram Bilas Sharma has also started a statewide campaign against the State Government. Sharma on Monday said that Narinder Sharma, former MlA from BSP from Pundri constituency has joined Haryana BJP along with his supporters.

State BJP wants to encash the opportunity of fight between Haryana Congress and INlD. On the one hand, it criticises the ruling Congress by saying that it is most corrupt, and inefficient to tackle law and order problem in the State, on the other hand, it criticises INlD too by saying that after the verdict of Delhi CBI court in JBT scam in which INlD supremo along with others were jailed, INlD got what it deserved.

BJP’s ally Haryana Janhit Congress has only one MlA in Haryana Assembly, yet it is hitting the Congress with the issue of five defector MlAs’, who had merged with the Congress to help Bhupinder Singh Hooda Government in 2009. HJC is accusing Speaker of Haryana Assembly, Kuldeep Sharma of bias.

Facing stiff opposition, Haryana Congress has decided to counter the charges of INlD and the BJP. The State unit of the party has held three State-level meetings of all the presidents of district, block and village level — one at Kurukshetra and two at Chandigarh.

PCC president Phool Chand Mullana on Monday directed all the presidents to go to every corner of the State and “clear the illusion” created against the Congress by different political parties.

Haryana Congress is also organising a mammoth rally at Hansi next month to counter INlD’s Pol Khol campaign and other parties’ campaign.
