UP seeks four-point details on tragedy

Tuesday, 19 February 2013 | PNS | Lucknow

The UP Government, which ordered a judicial probe into the stampede at Allahabad railway station that claimed 40 lives, has sought details on four points, including fresh suggestions on averting recurrence in future.

Briefing the media persons in lukcnow on Monday, IG (law & order) BP Singh said that the Government after ordering the probe sought reports on four points.

“It sought to know the exact reason leading to the tragedy, whether adequate steps were taken by the concerned officials to avert the exigency and what measures be taken after such an incident. Besides, the Government wants to fix responsibilities of negligent officials who could have saved lives by providing timely medical aid,” the IG said.

Besides these points, retired Justice Omkareshwar Batt has been urged to suggest measures which could be used to avert recurrence of similar incidents in future and about rescue operations to be undertaken, which could minimise the number of causalities.

Earlier, the Opposition parties had raised much hue and cry in the Vidhan Sabha pressing for a judicial probe into the Allahabad railway station tragedy as the State Government continued to drag its feet on initiating action against erring officials. later good sense prevailed and a decision in this regard was taken late on Sunday night.

While the judicial probe into the entire incident will be carried out by retired Justice Omkareshwar Bhatt of Allahabad High Court, the Government has also asked to complete the process in the next two months and table a report for necessary action.
