Within a fortnight from now, 62 new IT-enable parking lots will be available for the residents of North Delhi areas. This would come as a big relief to the people from the persistent parking woes as most of these parking sites are coming up in busy markets like Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Kirti Nagar and Bank Street among others. The tendering process has been completed and the contracts will be awarded within 15 days.
The allotment of all 62 surface parking lots will be done as per the amended parking policy that would make it mandatory for the parking contractors to have CCTV cameras and hand-held devices for issuing electronic parking slips to the motorists. The electronic slips will clearly mention the duration for which the vehicles are parked and the payable parking charge; meaning thereby lesser harassment for the motorists. Moreover, all the parking lots would have CCTV cameras installed that will ensure better monitoring of parking lots besides keeping a check on illegal parking by the attendants. These parking lots will also be equipped with sensors that will keep a check on the entry and exit of vehicles in a particular parking site.
“The tendering process has been completed. Tender for 70 parking lots were issued in the first week of January. Of these, 62 parking lots are ready to be allotted to the contractors soon. The parking lots with all the new features in place are likely to become operational in a fortnight,” said a senior official of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Violation of the clauses would invite monetary punishment and cancellation of licence after a certain number of violations, officials said.
Most of these parking lots are located in major residential and commercial hubs in all six zones of the North Delhi Corporation. Some of the important parking lots include Karol Bagh, East and West Patel Nagar market, Old Rajendra Nagar market, Ajmal Khan Road, Arya Samaj Road - II, Tank Road, Bhagirath Place, Ajmeri Gate to lahori Gate, Ramlila Maidan, Dangal Maidan, Vidoecon Tower, Aram Bagh, Rohini zonal office, transport authority on Under Hill Road, Tirath Ram Hospital and Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital and Batra Cinema.
Official said these IT-enabled parking lots would also help the corporation in augmenting its revenue. “The hand-held devices would be connected to the central server. A data of all the slips issued at parking lots would be recorded. The total revenue generated from a particular parking lot would be calculated that will become the basis of fixing the licence fee of the parking lot,” said an official.
The civic body expects to earn Rs 1.4 crore per month in lieu of licence fee from the 62 parking lots auctioned recently. Tender for 70 parking lots - licence of which had expired - were put on auction in first week of January.
At least 35 of these are new parking lots. The officials said the new parking lots will create space for over 10,000 vehicles across the city.
