The show will be held on March 2 at the Mughal Garden Lawns of the North Campus, Delhi University. More than 30 different varieties of plants will be on display at the show that will go on from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is to inaugurate the event.
The flower show this year is not going to be just a flowery affair. Through this show, the university will also spread information about anti-smoking awareness drive. “We have approached some theatre groups of the university, for putting up street plays on the day. Anti-smoking placards will be put up at various places and an information desk for the same will also be set up,” said I Usha Rao, chairman of the flower show committee. Rao is also the first lady proctor of the Delhi University.
Rao said university wants to link the effects of smoking to the plant kingdom. “We have been talking about how smoking affects human health. But this time we want to give a message that the smoking not just has health implications on humans but also on the plants,” added Rao.
The theme of the painting competition is also likely to be bases an environment. To motivate students to quit smoking, a signature campaign is also being initiated by the university. “We have tied up with the Delhi University Student Union. We wanted to rope in the youth for this. The DUSU will run a signature campaign and will make the students sign a pledge that they will not be smoking,” added Rao.
Through the equal opportunity cell of Delhi University, the proctor office will also ensure that they differentlyabled students from the Delhi University also get to participate in the event.
To ensure a good student turn out the ticket for entry has been priced at Rs 5. The individual exhibits have an entry fee of Rs 10, institution, schools and private garden at Rs 50 each.
