State food security mission launched in Haldwani

Rajendra S Markuna | Haldwani

nThe Government, given the present status of agro-economy of the State, has launched State food security mission to attain self-efficiency in food grains setting a roadmap for the next two years.

Whereas the concerned department has set a target of 22.02 lakh metric tone of food grains for the year 2010-11, its target for the year 2011-2012 is 24.15 lakh metric tone. At the same time it is to be noted that the concerned department had a target of 20.21 lakh metrict tone for the year 2009-10.

Apart from using improved variety of seeds, diversification or intensification of farming, enhancement of area of farming land both in plain and hill areas, the agriculture department will also encourage farmers to use innovative and scientific methods of farming to become self reliant in their business.

The employment of these scientific interventions will definitely help us achieve the targets we have fixed for the next couple of years ,said Madan Lal , Director, state agriculture department ,while talking to The Pioneer.

He further informed that the most important thing is that how to make the most of the available resources we have . Most of the times we have not able to ensure proper use of even agricultural land . More so sometimes the farmers don’t now how to use to the land after getting a crop .

Though most of the farmers have now begun to use the land that remains vacant after a particular crop by way of growing vegetables or other less time taking crops , we have to extend these short term crop seeds or methods to the farmers of remote areas . Only then we could be able to tap the full potential we have in agriculture sector, he maintained.

Stressing the need to use improved and hybrid variety of seeds , the director maintained that under the ambitious food security mission our focus would be on how to enhance use of these said variety of seeds. For example, we have decided to increase the total use of hybrid rice seeds by 10 per cent in the coming year . Similarly , we are also going to increase area of irrigated land by 10 per cent .

Presently we have around 1.83 lakh hectate irrigated land .Out of which 1.45 lakh hectate in plains and rest in hilly regions. Besides, our concern is also on how replace 95000 hectare land that we have in hill areas with subsidiary crops like maze and pulses and to make cultivable at least 1000 hectare land out of one lakh hectate barren land of hilly region in the given period of time . These are some of the interventions we have identified to employ while implementing the said mission, maintained.
