Govt plans to construct two lakh ponds and check dams

With an aim to provide better irrigation facilities to the farmers of the State, the Agriculture Department has decided to build 1,00,000 non-concrete check dam and similar number of ponds across the State.

The Agriculture Department has held a review meeting on Wednesday headed by Chief Secretary Shiv Basant. The state government has decided to form a committee, which will try to bring the various departments like Rural Development, Irrigation, Agriculture, Co-Operative and Forestry on one stage to produce better results in the field of agriculture.

The committee discussed during the meeting that how it can take helps all aforesaid departments to bring better results in the field of agriculture. The rain water management was the main issue of the meeting. Convergence of these departments will bring good results in this field said Shiv Basant.

During the meeting the participating members discussed to increase the cropping intensity in the State. Currently the cropping intensity of the State is 125 per cent and it has to increase up to 250 per cent the committee has decided it with a view to use the farms more than two season in the year.

Vegetables are the main agricultural products of the State but the vegetable growers are not getting appropriate prices due to lack of storage and better marketing facilities. The committee also has discussed this issue during the meeting and decided to build marketing infrastructure with the coordination of JINFRA.
