RMC gears up to improve waste management system

Monday, 24 June 2019 | Sumi Mahato/ Shailja Tirkey | Ranchi

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is all set to provide better cleanliness facilities in city in the coming days. Municipal Commissioner, Manoj Kumar, has directed the ward supervisors and zonal supervisors to keep a check on the process of garbage collection and disposal.

He said, “The officers should ensure that the garbage collecting vehicles cover every household before leaving for another zone. If the garbage collecting vehicles do not have a sound system, they should inform the residents about their arrival by blowing the whistles provided to them.”

The Municipal commissioner also instructed the supervisors to ensure that defunct vehicles are repaired by the first week of July so that they can be brought to use.

The commissioner informed that strict action would be taken against those who are found littering on the street.

Recently, RMC terminated RMSW Essel Infra, the private solid waste management company that was outsourced the work of garbage collection in 32 wards of the city. Following the termination of contract with this company, RMC has been looking over the work of garbage collection in the entire city.

Kumar said, “We are planning to install spot garbage disposal units, waterless urinals and garbage bins at commercial places across the city. Also, we would soon be launching an awareness drive through mobile messaging platforms.”

Meanwhile, the residents of the city are unhappy with the garbage collection mechanism of RMC.

Ankit Kumar, a resident of Kokar said, “The door to door garbage collection vehicles come once every three days. It is high time that the garbage management system is strengthened.”

On the other hand, some residents claimed that it is the work of the community as a whole to keep the city clean.

Sabina Kujur a resident of Morhabadi said, “Be a part of solution, not pollution. Each one of us must take initiative to keep our city clean. There are plenty of dustbins across the city. We should use them instead of throwing garbage anywhere else.”

Gandharav Gosain, 23, said, “Government is doing its best to improve the cleanliness conditions in the city and we must actively take part to do the same”.
