A 35-year-old NRI businessman was found dead at the five-star Taj Palace in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri on Sunday. The businessman identified as Munni Jaitely was a US passport holder and was found dead in his hotel room on the sixth floor of the hotel. Police said the staff realised something was amiss as he didn’t respond to his father’s phone calls. The hotel management opened the door with the duplicate key only to find the businessman lying still.
According to a senior police official, “Jaitley’s father called the hotel reception and requested them to check his son’s status. The hotel staff tried to connect with Jaitely through landline, but didn’t succeed.”
“Later, the hotel manager went to the room of Jaitely and knocked at the door. When he didn’t get any response, the room was opened with the duplicate key. Jaitely was lying unconscious,” said the police official privy to investigation.
“The hotel staff took him to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The police was informed by the hotel manager,” said the police official. They informed the police control room (PCR) and a police team reached the hospital.
“Preliminary investigation suggested that the businessman was alone and nobody had entered his room, including the hotel staff between Friday night and Saturday morning. CCTV footage was scanned to see whether anyone entered room. No movement whatsoever was noticed near his room. The deceased’s mother didn’t suspect murder,” said the police official.
“Post-mortem examination report is expected to throw some light on the exact cause of death. The businessman, who was not married and stayed with his family in the United States, was a regular visitor to the national Capital due to his business. He had come to stay at the hotel on Thursday”, the police official added.
