Issuing challans must not be target, CM to cops ‘Spread awareness about road safety’

Thursday, 17 October 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Asking the police brass to not set targets for issuing challans by terrorising commuters, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that a little awareness and a bit of strictness would help in preventing road accidents across the state.
“The UP Police should not set targets to issue challans and unnecessarily harass commuters. Instead, they should spread awareness among people about road safety and driving rules,” Yogi said while addressing a rally organised at the inauguration of Road Safety Awareness Week at his 5, Kalidas Marg residence in Lucknow on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister said, “Traffic police and district police personnel must not terrorise people at intersections on the pretext of checking vehicles. This should end. Punish those who are guilty, but do not harass innocent commuters,” he stressed.
Yogi said that vehicles of drivers found driving under the influence of alcohol should be seized and their licences cancelled.
“The beginning should be made from school. Awareness among children must be spread at school level and traffic awareness must be included in the curriculum which is the responsibility of Education department,” he said.
Yogi said that the efforts of Transport department had been fruitful and were showing positive results but there was still much to be done.
The Chief Minister further said that two-wheeler riders must wear helmets while riding and car users should use seat belts while driving.
“Never drive under influence of intoxicant. We must follow road safety and traffic rules. Such programmes cannot become successful without the common man’s contribution. If we move ahead with a good slogan on road safety, the results will be better,” he said.
“It is the responsibility of Health department to ensure that the injured get proper treatment and ambulances are despatched within stipulated time. Besides, new trauma centres have to be established.”
Around 25 Traffic Police bikers, 10 vintage cars, 100 bikers, 100 NCC cadets and 700 students from different schools participated in the rally.
