BJP-SAD gear up for Lok Sabha polls

Friday, 18 January 2019 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

Making it clear that 2019 Lok Sabha election would be fought in coalition with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab, the saffron party on Thursday expressed confidence of winning all the seats banking on the Narendra Modi Government’s achievements including opening of Kartarpur corridor, conviction in 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases, among others.

Punjab BJP in-charge Capt Abhimanyu, in his first interaction with the media after his appointment, also brushed aside reports of change in seat-sharing and arrangement with the SAD for the ensuing parliamentary polls.

“There is no plan to change the seat ratio in Punjab for Lok Sabha elections...BJP will decide their candidates just after the announcement of elections,” said Capt Abhimanyu, who was accompanied by Punjab BJP president Shawet Malik.

At the same time, Capt Abhimanyu expressed confidence of winning all seats in the state, maintaining that BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre had done lot of works, including for Punjab and the Sikh community, which would favour the SAD-BJP combine with Congress-led Punjab Government completely failing in fulfilling its promises.

“Modi Government’s efforts has opened the Kartarpur corridor,  the Centre is also carrying out lot of development works in Sultanpur Lodhi where Guru Nanak Dev spent 14 years of his life...People will surely vote in our favour,” said Capt Abhimanyu, who is also Cabinet Minister in the neighbouring Haryana.

Blaming the Congress party for allegedly giving political patronage to 1984 riots accused, Capt Abhimanyu said that Modi Government put in their best efforts to put the accused of 1984 riots behind the bars.

Capt Abhimanyu, who had earlier worked for three years with the party workers in Punjab as co-in-charge in 2009, said that the people of Punjab were not happy with the Congress Government as it has not fulfilled any of its promise.

Apparently closing eyes to SAD’s alleged involvement in the sacrilege cases that rocked the state in 2015 and even threw the SAD-BJP combine out of power, Capt Abhimanyu maintained that the issues for the state assembly and Lok Sabha elections are a lot different.

“Modi Government has done many works for Punjab and Punjabis like Kartarpur Corridor, justice in 1984 Sikh riots cases, and thus the people of Punjab is not against the BJP and will stand with the party in 2019 Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

Listing out achievements of the Modi Government, Capt Abhimanyu claimed that the Centre controlled terrorism inside the country and on border areas, the military killed naxalite and maoist in large number with increased 218 percent. “We brought law to confiscate the property of defaulters like Neerav Modi. We tried to make GST business friendly. Loan disbursement increased in Modi Government. We withdrew Rs three lakh crore loan from defaulters. We provided loan to 13 crore people,” he said.

He maintained that BJP would be contesting polls highlighting the Modi Government’s achievements in door-to-door and person-to-person campaign. “Today, 35 parties have become the part of NDA. It is in the hands of the public to decide whether they want majboot (powerful) government or the majboor (helpless) government.
