12 coaching centres served notices in Dehradun’

Monday, 27 May 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In the aftermath of coaching class inferno in Surat, where more than 20 students lost their lives, the Dehradun chief fire officer Sandeep Kumar Rana has issued notices to 12 coaching institutes which were operating without adopting fire safety measures in the provisional state capital.

The Director General (DG), Law and Order, Ashok Kumar said, “In Dehradun, there are very few coaching centres which have NOCs. Instructions have been given to all CFOs across the state to ensure that required fire safety measures are taken.”

Dehradun CFO Rana said, “Carrier Launcher, Time Coaching Centre, Bulls Eye coaching centre, Bansal Classes, Alpha- Beta- Gama coaching centre and Vibrant Academy-all on Subhash Road, Mahindra Educational Private Limited, Warrior Defence Academy, SK Campus, Lakshya Academy, Keshav Institute of Vertical Training — all on Subhash Road and Ground Zero Defence Institute at Survey Chowk were served notices on the weekend. They have been instructed to rectify all the lapses in fire security norms immediately.”

He further added, “We will continue to conduct our drive on Monday, to serve notices to coaching centres and other commercial buildings which are not fulfilling the requirement of fire security measures.”

It is pertinent to mention here that busy streets of Dehradun, especially the area around Karnpur, Paltan Bazaar, Tehsil market, Ghosi Gali and Rama Market are too narrow and congested to enable effective fire fighting in case of a fire. In fact, in the case of fire related emergency, the congested roads and encroachments on roads inside the market area make it difficult for fire engines to even enter such localities.

It is pertinent to mention here that though authorities are taking some action after the Surat incident, observers question the seriousness of the authorities. It is not only the coaching classes but most of the buildings being used for commercial purpose especially in the old market areas which have little or no fire safety measures in place.
