‘BJP to contest booth-centric polls’

Sunday, 25 August 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

The election in-charge for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jharkhand, Om Prakash Mathur, on Saturday said that the party will achieve its target of winning more than 65 seats in the upcoming elections by strengthening the party’s dominance at the booth level.

Addressing media persons at party’s State headquarters in Ranchi, Mathur said, “We have been contesting booth-centric elections for the past two to three years. Even our party President Amit Shah always asks workers to focus on winning booths. We will achieve our target of winning 65 seats in the upcoming elections by doing the same.”

Earlier in the day, Mathur chaired a meeting with senior leaders of the party here. The meeting was adjourned half way through after the news of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s demise reached the party office here. “I have lost a good friend. We worked together for 10 years in Rajya Sabha,” Mathur said, remembering his camaraderie with Jaitley.

Mathur said that the leaders in the BJP camp here are confident about achieving the target set by the party chief Amit Shah.  “This is the ninth time that I have been given the responsibility of elections in a State. I can feel a strong current in favour of BJP here,” he added.

The BJP National Vice President also lauded the initiatives of the Centre and the State Governments in implementing welfare schemes. He said that the welfare schemes of the two Governments have benefited people in rural India and garnered support for the BJP. “The State has done a commendable job of not only implementing all the Centre’s schemes effectively, but also launching its own welfare schemes for the people of Jharkhand,” Mathur said.

Taking a jibe at the Congress party, he said BJP is not run by an individual or a family. “Our party runs on ethics, morals and principles,” said Mathur, adding that even minor issues carry importance for the party and it is committed in addressing all issues irrespective of their severity. He said that the party workers were ecstatic about the revocation of article 370 and 35a of the Constitution of India.

The party, which has 42 members in the 81-member assembly here, has set a target of winning at least 65 seats in the next assembly elections slated this year. The party won 12 of 14 parliamentary constituencies in Jharkhand in the recent Lok Sabha polls and is expecting to replicate its success story in the Assembly polls.
