Voters angry over names not figuring in list

Monday, 19 November 2018 | PNS | Haridwar

Many residents of the ward number 32 expressed anger over their names not figuring in the voters list when they turned up at the booths to cast votes for the urban local body polls on Sunday. They were seen venting their annoyance to the leaders present there.

Since the morning,   the people in a large number thronged the polling booths at ward number 32 at Jwalapur. The polling was generally peaceful except some verbal tussle involving the activists of the BJP and the Congress. Police stepped in promptly and had things settled. The district administration officials claimed that the voting was brisk and the polls went off peacefully thanks to the elaborate arrangements put into place by them to ensure smooth and peaceful polling.

However, many voters returned without casting votes because of the absence of their names in the list. Even showing Aadhaar card did not help them. However, those who carried the voter identity cards had an easy way into the booths. Sanchit Sharma, a resident of ward number 32 complained that he was shocked over his name not figuring in the voters list despite the fact that he had been casting vote for the past one decade. Some people approached the state urban development minister Madan Kaushik with their complaints. But nothing happened and they had to return without participating in the polls.

The common refrain among the voters was that the parties had not chosen the right candidates for the ULB polls. Ajay Arora from ward number 16 said that he was confused over who to vote. “Things are funny. If one sets his mind to vote for a party he finds the candidate not good. And those contesting as independents are good though they stand no chance of winning. We are in a dilemma,” he said.

Another voter, Mahipal Rana echoed the same and said, “I voted one candidate from Congress and another from BJP. I chose the candidates more than the parties. I had planned to choose NOTA.  But later I changed my mind. However, the reality is that I do not expect much from any one of them.”

A beauty expert Geeta Sethi said, “ We vote despite our experiences being bad. They canvass for votes but once the election is over they cannot be traced. No good work has been done for the common people and the same is bound to repeat,” she rued.
