Surjewala seeks rollback of hike in stamp duty

Wednesday, 19 September 2018 | PNS | Chandigarh

Senior Congress leader and communications in-charge of the party,  Randeep Singh Surjewala has demanded the immediate withdrawal of massive hike in 65 types of stamp duty services like agreement deed, power of attorney and partnership deed in Haryana.

Criticizing the Haryana Government, Surjewala said that the State Government has lost the confidence of the people and now resorting to the policy of plundering the common people’s hard earned money by taking such arbitrary decisions one after another.

He stated that by effecting massive hike in the stamp duty rates for 65 types of deeds, the Manohar Lal Khattar Government has tried to break the backbone of the common people who are already reeling under the everyday increasing prices of essential commodities of common use for fallacious policies of the BJP Governments at the state and the Centre.

BJP Government has already been grabbing the national and international headlines for its ineffectiveness and maladministration and now it has put a stamp of confirmation on it being an anti people Government by effecting such a hefty increase in the stamp duty of 65 services.

Surjewala said that the Khattar Government has imposed a massive 267 percent increase in partnership deed stamp duty while increasing this stamp duty from Rs 3.75 to Rs 1,000 and 889% increase in stamp duty for agreement deeds by increasing it from Rs 2.25 to Rs 2,000. Similarly, the stamp duty for power of attorney has been increased by 333 percent by increasing this stamp duty from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000.

For power of attorney, a person will now have to shell out Rs 100 instead of Rs 37.50, he said.

The Congress leader said that earlier one had to purchase Rs 15 stamp paper for executing various types of agreements, which has now been increased to Rs 100 by the Haryana  Government.  Agreement fee has also been increased from Rs 15 to Rs 100. In this manner, an increase in stamp duty up to Rs 1997.75 has been made for executing various types of agreement and stamp duty related services, he added.

Surjewala further said that fee for obtaining arms license has been increased from Rs 60 to Rs 1,500 for each weapon. In the same manner, late fee charges for arms license have also been increased.

These anti people decisions of the Haryana Government are the clear proof that this Government has always been on the lookout to devise ways on how to snatch money from the pocket of the common man. While on the one side, the people of the state were  already suffering immensely on account of steep price rise and now the people would be forced to pay hefty fee for executing various deeds entailing stamp duty, he said.

He also reminded the people that this Khattar Government instead of giving relief to the people in petrol and diesel prices further compounded their problems by increasing VAT on petrol from 21 percent to 25 percent and on diesel, from 9.24 percent to 17.22 percent. Today, when the prices of crude oil are falling in the international market, the prices of diesel and petrol have sky-rocketed and the Khattar Government has been imposing more financial burden on the common people instead of giving any relief in view of the unprecedented rise in the prices of petrol and diesel, he added.
