Humiliated by in-laws, cop shoots self

Saturday, 17 November 2018 | SHEKHAR SINGH | NEW DELHI

A 35-year-old Delhi Police Head Constable committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver outside the Delhi Secretariat in the VVIP parking area opposite gate no. 3 of Players Building at 6 am on Friday.

A suicide note was also recovered from the body in which he blamed his in-laws for insulting him publicly by thrashing him a day ago. A case under Section 306 (abatement of suicide) has been registered and investigation has been taken up. HC Sohanveer Singh was posted at the Delhi Secretariat and was on duty at the time of incident. According to a senior police official, the Secretariat staff alerted the IP estate Police station on Friday.

The suicide note said, “My brother-in-law, Yashpal, who is a Head Constable in Uttar Pradesh Police posted at Gautam Budh Nagar, and one other relative, Chaman, are responsible for my death.”

“They had on Thursday assaulted me publicly and also video-graphed it. It hurt my self-respect and I have no other option but to commit suicide. You can check the video and take legal action against them,” said the suicide note.

“My wife, who is also a constable with the Delhi Police and posted at Nandd Nagri Police station, has an extra marital affair with one Pankaj from my village. When I had complained about it to my in-laws, they abused me and also threatened that I am demeaning their dignity,” he said in the suicide note.

He had also discussed about the incident and video with his fellow colleagues the night before he shot himself, said the senior police official.

“We have sent the body for post-mortem and informed the family. A case has been registered and further investigation is going on,” said the senior police official.

Sohanveer hailed from Muzzafarnagar in Uttar Pradesh and had joined the Delhi Police in 2008. He was transferred in June this year to security department and was posted at Delhi Secretariat. He used to live with wife and two children at Biharipur in Delhi.
