Saturday, 22 September 2018 | PNS | Chandigarh/Shimla

The states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana are likely to get heavy rains over the next three days,  the Met office said on Friday.

"Certain areas in Himachal are likely to experience heavy spells of rain till Monday," said an official of Meteorological Department.

He  said there are chances of heavy to very heavy rains at some places in mid and low hills on September 23 and 24.

The Met Department's forecast said the western disturbances - storm systems originating from the Mediterranean Sea and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region - would remain active in the region till September 25.

Meanwhile, Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest town in the state with a low of 7.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures in Shimla and Manali were 14 degrees and 10.2 degrees respectively. Kalpa, some 250 km from Shimla, saw the night temperature at 8.6 degrees Celsius.

On the other hand, Punjab Government has issued a heavy rainfall alert. A government’s spokesperson said that as per information received from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the State is likely to experience widespread rainfall during late September 22 to 24.

Many districts in Doaba, Majha and Malwa are very likely to get heavy (more than seven to 12 cm) to very heavy rainfall (more than 12 cm) during these days.

“There is very high probability of extremely heavy rainfall in North Eastern and South Eastern parts of Punjab during September 22 to 24. As there is very high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall in adjoining areas of Himachal also, hence above spell may cause inundations of low lying area and water logging in some area,” said the spokesperson.

The areas likely to get very heavy to extremely heavy rains are Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Nawashahr, Roopnagar, Patiala, Mohali and adjoining area.

The district authorities have been advised to suitably take adequate measures, informed the spokesperson.
