Cong protests as former MLA barred temporarily from entering Assembly building

Wednesday, 19 September 2018 | PNS | Dehradun

Former MLA and previous president of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Kishore Upadhyay sat in protest at the entrance of the Vidhan Sabha when he was barred from entering the building. Upadhyay was going in to submit a memorandum signed by various party leaders to the Chief Minister when he was stopped. However, after strong protest by Congress MLAs, he was allowed to enter.

Before the start of the house proceedings, Upadhyay was entering the Assembly building when he was stopped by two personnel. Along with his supporters, he then sat down at the entrance in protest. He said that he had earlier talked to the Vidhan Sabha Speaker Premchand Agrawal and assured that he was simply going to meet the CM and submit a memorandum pertaining to the demand for according traditional forest rights and the status of forest dwellers to the State’s people. However, he was stopped by security personnel in civilian dress from entering the Assembly building. Congress members questioned why a former MLA with I-card was being barred from entering the assembly building.

As the situation heated up, the personnel stepped back and allowed Upadhyay to enter the building. The memorandum submitted by Upadhyay was signed by leaders of CPI, CPI (M), Samajwadi Party and Congress apart from social activists. Later, when the house was called in session the Congress members raised the issue of the former MLA being barred from entering despite having valid documents. The speaker observed that an ex-MLA with I-card should be allowed entry.
