PTI | Patna
To promote water conservation in Bihar, the State Government would soon enact a law making rainwater harvesting mandatory in urban areas.
The Bill would make it mandatory for every household in urban areas to build an underground water tank to store excess rainwater harvested from the rooftops of multi-storeyed buildings and apartments, Water Resource Development Minister Vijendre Yadav said.
“We have formulated a water policy which also includes provision for rain water harvesting. The bill is being formulated which would be ready by the first week of October and it will be tabled in the next session of assembly,” Yadav said.
He said that there was an urgent need to enact a law in this regard in view of the drastic fall in the groundwater table and there was urgent necessity to recharge depleting groundwater and the bill was a step in that direction.
Noting that rainwater harvesting has been a success in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan, the minister said that the scheme would benefit the urban areas of the state particularly districts like Gaya, Aurangabad.
