SSA making steady progress in Himachal

The Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) launched in 2001 in Himachal Pradesh is making a steady progress with strengthening and expansion of basic infrastructure in Elementary Schools.
As many as 9895 Classrooms, 56 Block Resource Centres(BRC), 538 Cluster Resource Centres(CRC), 10,463 toilets including separate toilets for girls, 2312 drinking water facilities, 88 kitchen sheds and 3607 boundary walls had been sanctioned under SSA till date.
Out of these sanctioned schemes, construction of 7949 additional rooms, 45 BRCs, 486 CRCs, 3607 boundary walls, 2276 drinking water facilities, 83 kitchen sheds, 649 major repairs, 5225 toilets had been completed and a provision of Rs 44.20 crore had been made in 2009-10 budget for construction of 859 rooms, 3650 Girl Toilets, 1 BRC Building, 40 Primary School Buildings and 1133 Boundary Walls. In addition a provision of Rs 74.97 lakh had been made for providing furniture to 14995 students of upper primary classes.
Library movement for setting up 210 libraries has been started in collaboration with a Non Government Organisation in Shimla district to improve the ‘Reading and writing’ skills of the students and raise their level of confidence, a spokesman of SSA said.
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan aimed at ensuring 100 per cent enrolment of all children in the age group of 6-14 years by developing necessary infrastructure and ensuring that no child was required to walk more than 1.5 km to reach the school for elementary education.
Another area of importance under the SSA is inclusive education to bridge social, regional and gender gaps with the active participation of the community in the management of schools and bring the ‘Children with special needs’ into mainstream school education system.
Students residing in the far-flung areas were being brought in mainstream by providing education under Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) Centres up to class III while 19643 out of 22040 identified physically challenged Children with Special needs were studying in formal schools. As many as 1092 resource persons had been trained to educate these children and disability had been included as a subject in B Ed courses.
The Girl Education being another focus area under SSA, free text books were being provided to all the girls’ from class-1 to VIII and National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level was being implemented in eight educationally backward blocks in Chamba, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmour districts of the State. Further, Remedial teaching was being provided to needy girls in selected subjects for atleast three months in a year and ten Kashturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) were functioning in seven blocks of the State. At present, 396 Girls had been enrolled in these KGBVs.
