Alienating our own culture

Balbir K Punj

Over the last 10 days, English dailies and many leading vernacular newspapers in the country have been devoting columns after columns to pop star Michael Jackson who recently passed away. About a fortnight ago, sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan passed away in the US, a country he had migrated to some years ago. The Press here devoted just a few paragraphs to his demise. Even a memorial meeting that was organised in New Delhi in his remembrance and attended by several eminent artistes got desultory coverage. But on July 8, the same newspapers were giving prime space to Michael Jackson’s funeral.

The contrast truly brings out how we Indians have become culturally decadent. By any standard the Ustad’s stature as a musician was far greater than Jackson’s. True, the American pop singer made tonnes of money and his fans were spread all over the world. He died in huge debt and the latest reports on his death say that he was literally living on several different ‘pills’, and that overdose might have been the cause of his untimely demise. Yet, when one thinks about the obsessive media coverage that Michael Jackson’s death got as compared to the blink-and-miss variety reporting that Ali Akbar’s demise elicited, one is compelled to conclude that our cultural values have slowly been eroded away.

For the last 15 days we have been reading a lot about Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalises unnatural sex such as homosexuality and bestiality. When the Delhi High Court gave its surprising verdict on this section and dubbed it as unconstitutional, the usual bunch of ‘liberals’ and ‘intellectuals’ proclaimed ‘freedom’. But what was even more surprising is that several newspapers encouraged them. What about the impact on society you ask. The ‘liberals’ couldn’t care less. As in the case of Michael Jackson, they were busy aping the West. They were not even bothered to consider the cancer that such misplaced notions of liberalism had wrought on Western society in the form of same sex ‘marriages’, decline in marital bonds within heterosexual families, increasing violence among children whose parents have changed partners several times over, the spread of drug culture, etc.

A society that idolises Michael Jackson is highly superficial. Almost every leading Western music band has thrown up idols who ended their lives prematurely due to drug abuse. This fact has been revealed in their biographies.

In contrast, in Indian classical music, artistes devote their whole lives to their art. They do not need any drug for this. They go on devotion, determination and love for their music. They perform from the heart and their music is part of their devotion to god. Whereas, Western musicians, especially pop and rock musicians, are least bothered about their art. All they are worried about is to put on a good show, and they are willing to go to any lengths for this — taking drugs, using abusive language or even publicly making a fool of themselves.

Our education system has much to answer for this decadence among our young who blindly follow Western culture. How many of our students read Kalidas’s works in either the original or translations? How many of our economics graduates can quote even one line from Kautilya’s Arthasastra? Pick out any 10 higher secondary school students and ask them to name one reputed classical singer. Most of them will fail this test. The moment a conscientious Education Minister, like Mr Murli Manohar Joshi was, tries to incorporate some study of Indian cultural in the school syllabi, ‘liberals’ and ‘intellectuals’ gather to condemn this as ‘saffronising’.

Ages ago, Valmiki in his Ramayan portrayed Ram as travelling through many parts of India whose geography, flora and fauna were described in great detail. Kalidas in his Meghdoot describes the entire country from north to south. If someone so much as even suggests that our school curricula incorporate the magnificence of this poetic imagination that almost accurately describes our country, the liberal crowd would call him a Hindutva demagogue.

This alienation with our own cultural achievements exists even when our men and women have gained recognition in the West. This is why Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan chose to stay in the US in the latter half of their lives. Even our spiritual greats like ISKCON founder Bhakti Vedanta Prabhupada and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi became known to our national conscious only through the West.

There is something seriously wrong with us if we are willing to spend crores on statues for our political leaders but are not willing to recognise the greatness of our spiritual leaders and artistes or support them generously when they need it the most. Could it be our education system that is to blame for inculcating this sense of inferiority for everything Indian unless some foreigner recognises its true worth?

Bullet Deviants they are, not liberals
By Ramesh on 7/13/2009 10:36:17 PM

These so called "liberals" - those who brand themselves as such - are actually deviants. They are the root cause of the decadence in our society.

Bullet surprising article & comments
By Amoghavarsha.ii on 7/13/2009 3:49:48 PM

I am surprised of two things in this page.1. Writer is linking, music, art, education, god, religion and politics. As a politician, from a particular political party, looks always to link it up to his advantage. Politicians using everything at there disposal for there benefits in the name of doing good to public.2. commentors are linking music to secularism, government, education, etc., to there own benefits of argumentation. Both are doing two common things.

Bullet Too many peers
By Ganesh on 7/12/2009 10:41:24 AM

Besides the ever growing crowd of pseudo seculars ,another source of concern is bollywood. The name itself is synonymous of the western ape mentality. Moreover for the bollywood stars, the country is only a market to sell western dreams.Their own loyalities are with western countries. They do not speak a word of Hindi outside of their film dialogues.Their mannerisms, their lifestyle in real life and in films pooh poohs the Indian culture. As can be seen the quality of films have nosedived.

Bullet Alienation of culture
By Syamal on 7/10/2009 11:52:07 PM

Many of us absolutely agree with Mr. Punj's comments. Thanks to the so called "intellectuals" and "liberals" in India, and the media cheerleaders, foreign-crazed India has at last been proudly importing foreign culture blindly without any restraint. Business advertisements, movies and magazines are going full steam to feed into the trend and transform the people by pandering to their sensual gratification, urge for ultra-materialism and craving to copy the West.

Bullet india needs revolution
By ravi kumar on 7/10/2009 10:13:40 PM

Dear Sir, There should be one revolution in india, a revolution of intellectual kind which will make people realise what they are losing by aping the west. Getting good idea and concept of freedom is not bad but as media highlights only these things and tries to bring it mainstream society gets a wrong direction. Another idea is to separate news from ideological media. Newspapers should be labeled purely as NEWS and IDEAS (Warning: Do Not get influenced by this idea, Please form your own opinion)

Bullet Hindu Families must take charge
By Indira on 7/10/2009 7:52:13 PM

It is a genuine concern. But, knowing Indian government, it is futile to expect them to change the educational system so that Hindus can have sense of pride in their culture. This is like expecting the Sun to rise in the west. Government exists to serve their own need using the people. So, Hindu families must take charge to organize community cultural schools for kids like we do in the U.S. parents should spend time with kids teaching our cultural heritage to kids. Are they willing to invest ?

Bullet How many know our Technical achievements?
By pavan on 7/10/2009 4:11:38 PM

How many people know counting system(decimal system) originated from india along with 0. How many people know infinite serieses created in kerala. How many people know that india created Algebra,Trignometry,Calculus? How many people know that from india, advanced Medical systems are originated( to name a few.. surgery, vaccines,Heart problems, astma, ayurveda, yoga etc..). How many people know Astronomy originated from india.

Bullet @ Asha Is it not what RSS is doing.
By pavan on 7/10/2009 4:02:45 PM

Look, RSS is doing exactly what you are telling. But due to this pseudo secular scumbags taken over from the time we got independence. It started with Nehru. "Get rid of every thing we own. Start afresh by looking at west" is the essence of nehru. He founded JNU. It continuously producing these scumbags. They even went on to question our roots. Perhaps international conspiracy. Through media, they succeded in alienating RSS from mainstream india.

Bullet Slave mentality
By Rahul on 7/10/2009 2:42:16 PM

In spite of inheriting amongst the oldest, but amazingly rich civilization of the world, having the size, the geographical protection, the massive population and immense resources, it is impossible to fathom how we Indians managed to remain slave for over a thousand years. No wonder western stuff are highly regarded and our own priceless heritage means nothing to a significant part of the population.

Bullet Learned Suppression
By Mohan on 7/10/2009 1:52:54 PM

Sir, An excellent article that really brought to light what we Indians are all about. As a US raised Indian, I find that there is more concern for preserving our roots among Indians here than in India. I was deeply saddened by the overturn on 377, because I am a first-hand observer of the decadence that results when morality is put second over individual "freedom".

Bullet Dying soul
By S. L. Murthy on 7/10/2009 12:38:46 PM

The soulless liberal crowd has taken over the media. The English Press with few exceptions has been monstrously denigrating whatever is considered vital to Indian culture. The shameless liberal crowd peacockishly ask " What is Indian in culture?"They adoringly accept American Culture or British Culture as viable and real. God do some thing to these guys who move about with soul so dead?

Bullet deriding our culture
By Srinivasan on 7/10/2009 12:14:49 PM

Dear Sir,

This article has hit the bull's eye perfectly. As for as our Indian Media(execpting Pioneer), anything of Indian origin or any ethnic indian thing more than 300 years old is tribal and unsophisticated. For them, India and indians started living only after the British started ruling us. So it is no wonder that anything western is being eulogised here .

Bullet Indians & culture
By Atma Gandhi on 7/10/2009 10:31:45 AM

I agree with the statement "There is something seriously wrong with us" and think that Indians have not yet shed thier Slave Mentality, hence everything what West does is treated as great and accepted, adopted and idolised without bothering to know consequences. We should learn good things of West like hard work, patriotism. scientific quest instead of their life style which is purely superficial and based on excessive consumerism funded by borrowings.

Bullet Where art thou Indian culture?
By Bhavani on 7/10/2009 9:35:04 AM

Dear Sir:Thanks for such a thought provoking article.

Bullet I empathize with author but do not agree with his arguments
By Kedar on 7/10/2009 8:44:41 AM

While I empathize with Balbirji's sentiments regarding scant coverage for Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's sad demise vs. Michael Jackson's death, I feel that this does not have much to do with us forgetting our cultural roots. If Balbirji would feel relieved, I know enough lovers of Hindustani music (most of them from younger generation) who silently mourned Ustadji's demise. They certainly would not like to make a show of it with big splash news items.

Bullet culture
By raj on 7/10/2009 8:05:16 AM

Hindus are living in delusions about western culture not realising how much contempt & disdain they are shown by even the lowest western bums.Yet the so-called educated hindus eat, drink & breath western culture.Shows the inferiority complex of a people enslaved for a 1000 years. With PseudoSecular" scumbags in power who want to destroy the native hindu culture there is no hope as apathetic hindus are half dead people!

Bullet Indian educational system is based on British and not Indian cultural platform
By Bharat on 7/10/2009 4:41:53 AM

Know thyself ! Unless education in India is bsed on Indian cultural platform, educated Indians will continue to be subservient reflecting enslaved minds. One is not an educated Indian, if one has not read Vedas and Upnishads and the like. Learn from West similar to what West has learnt from India.

Bullet Well Said
By Paddy on 7/10/2009 3:10:33 AM

Well said Balbirji. Our craze for the West is making us Spineless. Not sure when we Indians would understand our worth & have self-esteem to march towards making India a developed country!!!!!

Bullet Hindu cultural organisations are equally responsible for the state of Hindu culture
By asha on 7/10/2009 1:57:43 AM

Blaming the government is futile. The Jews all over the world teach their kids to read and write Hebrew at an early age - this is not done by schools. They learn about their culture and history on weekends and during holidays.Hindu organizations should organize camps, classes, debates and talks for children and adults to teach them about Hindu culture and its vast literature. If Hindus want to keep their culture alive they have to spend money and time in research .
