State Govt gets proposals of 40 engineering, 5 medical colleges

To perk up the technical education, the State might have new engineering and medical colleges. The State Government has received proposals for 40 engineering and five medical colleges. Presently there are 63 engineering colleges with 77,000 students studying in it. These colleges churn out about 20,000 engineers every year. Besides, there are 140 technical institutes imparting diploma and other education to the students.

In the last few years the higher education sector in the State has got a fillip with the coming up of number of educational institutions and the quality of education imparted to the students has also improved.

Earlier the students had to go outside the State for technical education now hordes of students flock to Orissa to get technical education for which another 40 engineering and five medical colleges might come up as the State Government has received proposals for it.

Besides, the private engineering colleges, the Government-sector Rourkela NIT and three engineering colleges in Burla, Talcher and Bhubaneswar are functioning.

There has been a mushroom growth of technical universities in the State. In the Government sector there are nine universities, while private engineering colleges have also received deemed university status.

In Argul, near Bhuabneswar, the work for setting up an IIT has kick started and work for the National Law University near Cuttack has also begun.

The Ravishankar University near Cuttack and the Vedanta University in Puri have also begun. Once completed, the universities will put Orissa on the global platform in the field of technical education.
